In 2013 I have tested the UClear HBC200 Force intercom system<\/a> and this year was quite early in the helmet-to-helmet Bluetooth communications segment. Although I liked the device for some reason, my path and UClear have never crossed again until now.<\/p>\n I was reminded of them when I made my last ones Scorpion Exo-GT930 helmet review<\/a> because Scorpion is now using a UClear-made communication unit to snap into some of its new covers.<\/p>\n A quick online search showed me UClear’s wide range of communication devices. A phone call with the company got me excited about their current product range and the promise of upcoming groundbreaking innovations – we’ll see.<\/p>\n While I am always looking forward to new devices and features, this is a good time to catch up and check out UClear’s top device – the Motion Infinity Bluetooth Motorcycle Audio Sound System, which has been in the market for some time.<\/p>\n The UClear Motion Infinity probably has more bells and whistles than any helmet intercom I’ve tested. Some of its unique features include gesture control and crash detection. Add in this mesh intercom radio that allows for unlimited connections as well as voice commands, high definition sound, a mobile app with wireless firmware updates, music sharing and more. The device has an LED display that uses six colors and either flashes or remains lit to alert you to various functions.<\/p>\n The only thing missing is an FM radio, and frankly, I’ve never used that feature in a motorcycle helmet headset that I’ve owned. I stream my music from Spotify or Pandora, but I usually play the music from my iPhone’s music library. Management stated that FM radio is not on their priority list or mine. My trips often extend into areas with no cellular connection or usable FM radio signals, so FM never attracted me. You may feel different or drive exclusively in urban areas.<\/p>\n With all functions on the UClear<\/a> Motion Infinity bluetooth motorcycle audio system (even the name is long) I had to do something I rarely do – read the manual. Fortunately, the manual is well organized and has given me the knowledge to fully operate the Motion Infinity.<\/p>\n I pulled down the top liner of the Scorpio<\/a> Helmet, loosened the cheek pads and lead out the cable to the UClear unit, which is mounted on the outside of the helmet. Next up were the speakers. The speakers are round, but there is a small bulge or ledge on one side for the input and microphone cables. At their widest point, the speakers are 1.8 inches in diameter. I suspect and hope that larger speakers will provide better sound and bass. It turned out that they barely fit into the speaker pods of the Scorpion ST1400 test helmet, but they did.<\/p>\n These top of the line Pulse Pro 2 speakers from UClear each contain a microphone emanating from each speaker. I ran these wires under the cheek pads and they are now peeking out of the cheek pad seam. A quick test call revealed that I sounded good to the recipient. All mechanics were now complete.<\/p>\n Pairing my phone with the UClear Motion Infinity was easy. Next, I downloaded UClear’s ClearLink app onto my iPhone (an Android app is also available) and it connected to the device immediately. I followed the instructions to update the firmware to version 1.52. The screen told me it would take about an hour. However, the meter showing the progress told me it would take over five hours. I don’t know why as I had a fast WiFi connection at home. I canceled this update attempt and decided to update via my PC. It took five minutes to download the firmware file from the UClear website and apply the update. Other users report that updating the firmware using Android is much faster than using the iOS app.<\/p>\n A USB-C cable and charger are required to charge the helmet. Users must first pull the main cable from the device into the helmet and use this connector for charging. It’s not a big deal at home. However, the lack of a separate charging port means that there is no possibility of charging while it is in operation. Although the battery life is reported to be 18 hours, it is a problem if you don’t charge the device and need to use it right away. This should be fixed by UClear.<\/p>\n The Motion Infinity has four buttons that allow users to access all functions by pressing directly in different ways – no different from other brands. UClear offers a unique “gesture control” feature that gives commands to play music, intercom and phone without touching the device. It works with the user’s hand within an inch of the sensor on the control unit.<\/p>\n Single tap to play music. Tap and hold two seconds to pause. Two quick taps for a higher volume. Double-tap and hold the second tap for a second to decrease the volume. Tap three times to skip a track and tap three times, then press and hold the third to go back one track. It works fine and after two minutes I was an expert. Gesture controls can easily be turned off with the shortcut button if you don’t want to use them.<\/p>\n Hot Tip About Gesture Control – I took advantage of this feature by tilting my head quickly to the left, which activated the sensor when it detected my shoulder. A long tilt started \/ stopped the music and so on. Look, ma, no hands!<\/p>\n For music, tapping the shortcut key opens the Infinity’s U-Command function, which allows users to give commands directly to the device. For this to work, the ClearLink app must be connected in the background or foreground. You can ask about the battery status, repeat a call, microphone control, music, intercom or make a phone call. Double-tapping the quick access button activates Siri or Google Assistant, so drivers can use all the functions of these virtual AI assistants. Siri does my heavy lifting and I don’t worry about the battery level.<\/p>\n For intercom and phone, similar tapping turns the microphone on and off, connects the intercom, plays \/ pauses the music overlay, and ends a call. Sharing music between two devices works well and is just a few keystrokes away.<\/p>\n UClear’s USafe crash sensor uses “an advanced accelerometer” to detect hard bumps, a feature I’ve never seen anywhere else in helmet communication. According to UClear: “If you don’t react, USafe can notify emergency services and contacts (with) your status and your GPS location.” Drivers can trigger this function manually by repeatedly pressing the power button. When the trigger is triggered, the LED in the Chartreuse flashes. To access this feature, you need to register the product, fill in the USafe \/ SOS information and contact form, connect the UClear to a GPS enabled mobile device, and then activate it from the configuration menu. One limitation is that a cell signal is required to send the SOS message.<\/p>\n Have the product packaging ready to scan the serial number on the outside of the box. When you start the USafe login process, first go to the serial number code field, click the scan icon in that field and scan the barcode. Do this first to avoid a failed registration and the need to start over after completing all of the other fields – don’t ask me how I know. The serial number is also located on the back of the device and can be entered manually. Keep your device turned on and within range during this setup. This was another learning moment as I carried the phone without a helmet into the garage to get the box. When I returned to the helmet in my office, the connection I had to start over was lost – my completed form was lost.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
