As a native of Southern California, I don’t like it when I get cold while riding my motorcycle. I don’t mind temperatures well into the 90s, but the 50s make me uncomfortable on the autobahn. There are a few ways to fight the cold, and different strategies will work for different conditions. When I want to be warm in the morning and have slight flexibility when the sun heats things up, the Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers – top and pants – have done the job for years.<\/p>\n

The clothing-based solutions range from jacket and trouser linings to heated clothing. A jacket or pant lining is great when you know you will need it for the whole street. However, it can be annoyingly time-consuming to stop to unbutton, unlock, and unzip a liner – and then you get stuck with a bulky liner or two. Also, a jacket that goes well with the lining can feel a little loose when it’s gone. When it’s frosty, nothing beats heated clothing. However, it’s expensive, requires a motorcycle’s electrical system to be set up to power it, and takes up a lot of space if you want to take it off. Again, the Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers solve many of these problems or work in conjunction with one of these approaches.<\/p>\n

The material of the Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers is simple – 92 percent polyester and eight percent elastane. That gives just enough stretch so that the layers cling to my body in a friendly hug without constricting in the least. The polyester fiber is exceptionally soft and gives the layers a classy feel. They are perfectly smooth without the scratches you might feel on other base layers. These are items of clothing that you want to keep on your skin all day. Fly racing<\/a> claims a sun protection of UPF 40+, although I see this as under and not as external wear.<\/p>\n

Though Heavyweight is in the name, the medium-sized long sleeve top weighs 9.2 ounces while the pants weigh 7.2 ounces. No wonder, because the material in the top feels much thicker than the material of the pants. Speaking of pants, Fly left out the bow tie – a strange oversight.<\/p>\n

Everyone’s sensitivity to heat and cold is different. For me, the Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers bring about 10 to 15 degrees of warmth for me. In conjunction with an all-season jacket and pants combination with an inner lining, I’m good for driving in the 40s. When the temperature is in my lower 60s, the base layers allow me to comfortably ride without a liner. This is especially helpful in the transitional seasons – spring and autumn – when it can be cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons.<\/p>\n

I like the shifts for all types of road driving as well as off-road ADVing. The top layer is too efficient for pure dirt biking. I start sweating quickly, regardless of the temperature. The material breathes well enough and eventually helps the sweat evaporate, but it’s not designed to vent excess heat outside, so I keep sweating. Fly Racing offers a light version – I have to try.<\/p>\n

Years of use of the Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers have proven to be remarkably durable. The Fly logo on the top is a bit worn because I often only wear the top – my legs are not as sensitive to the cold as my upper body. I always wash them in cold water and dry them on a hanger, which helps longevity. The label recommends hand washing or the gentle cycle with mild soap – I didn’t follow these recommendations. I wash the layers every time because they are on my skin. Used flies Polygiene<\/a> Odor control technology, and it seems to work – the layers never had an offensive aroma.<\/p>\n

The size information is a bit generous. While I’m usually a large in a jacket, jersey and pants, the medium size fits me just right.<\/p>\n

I am a completely satisfied user of Fly Racing Heavyweight Base Layers. When it cools down and I have to ride, the layers allow me to regulate my temperature easily and flexibly, all in a package that feels luxurious on my skin.<\/p>\n
