When the BMW K 1600 series came onto the market for the first time in 2011, the Bavarian manufacturer presented its flagship tourers to showcase its latest and greatest technological innovations for touring bikers.<\/p>\n

From central locking cases to electronically adjustable windscreens to onboard speakers, the K 1600 was on the cutting edge. It offered relaxed cruising with ultimate comfort, mile after mile.<\/p>\n

But 10 years later the K 1600 was showing its age. When we tested it in late 2020, we felt the entire ensemble looked a bit dated compared to some of its competitors. But that should change.<\/p>\n

BMW has announced that a new line of K 1600 models is on the way for 2022, which we will be testing in Spain in a few weeks.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, and before our full review, there are five-man driving aids and technical parts that suggest that the German manufacturer has caught up and perhaps even overtaken the competition.<\/p>\n

The widescreen TFT<\/h2>\n

The previous K 1600 series had a rather outdated display with analog dials and a small LCD display. For 2022, however, BMW has ditched this in favor of a whopping 10.25-inch TFT color screen, and it looks awesome.<\/p>\n

It can be navigated with BMW’s proven miracle wheel and can display everything from turn-by-turn navigation instructions to information about what song you’re blowing out of the onboard speakers.<\/p>\n

Most interesting, however, is the new split screen option that allows you to use this widescreen display to project two displays at the same time. So you can keep an eye on your sat nav and monitor your tire pressure at the same time. Pretty fancy.<\/p>\n

BMW audio system<\/h2>\n

If the trip to the Alps with your favorite road trip playlist from your bike sounds like your dream tour, then BMW has your back with the Audio System 2.0.<\/p>\n

It is standard on the K 1600 GTL and Grand America models, and optionally available on the lower GT and B motorcycles.<\/p>\n

BMW has updated its sound system for 2022 with new speakers for better sound quality and an updated user interface to make steering easier in the saddle.<\/p>\n

Dynamic electronic suspension adjustment<\/h2>\n

Aside from music, BMW’s next part of driving technique is damn useful when it comes to touring.<\/p>\n

The Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment, which is standard on the entire K 1600 series, allows you to choose from a number of preset suspension settings that suit your desired driving style, from comfortable cruising to energetic driving.<\/p>\n

In addition to these pre-settings, sensors continuously monitor the condition of the bike, including the angle of inclination, acceleration and deceleration speed, and adjust the suspension accordingly. There’s also automatic load balancing, so you can add luggage, a passenger, or both, and your suspension will adjust to the extra weight.<\/p>\n

While this technology is common on premium bikes today, it is particularly welcome on touring machines like the K 1600, especially when they are burdened by pillion passengers and luggage.<\/p>\n

The adaptive headlights of the BMW K 1600 series<\/h2>\n

Cornering lights are nothing new in the motorcycle world, but BMW’s adaptive headlights take the concept to another level.<\/p>\n

The K 1600 turns its headlight when you turn a corner of 35 degrees to ensure that your target is always fully illuminated. It even adapts up and down when accelerating and braking to counteract crouching or diving during heavy driving.<\/p>\n

When it comes to driving dark dirt roads or unlit roads at night, I think it is a valuable driver aid to help you stay safer in the saddle.<\/p>\n

Smart LED lighting<\/h2>\n

This one caught my eye in particular, and I think the reason is one that I am sure many other bikers can sympathize with.<\/p>\n

You know, I just moved into a new apartment with an unlit garage and driveway. That’s all well and good when I stop in the dark, but as soon as I turn off the engine and retract the bike, I have to rely purely on memory to cope with the various hazards in my garage.<\/p>\n

BMW’s new fancy LED lighting would mean the end of my life Crystal maze<\/em>Evening routine in style. It has the “Welcome”, “Goodbye” and “Follow me home” functions called by BMW.<\/p>\n

The “Welcome” and “Goodbye” functions keep the front and rear lights on for a certain period of time after the ignition is switched off, while the “Follow me home” function means that when the ignition is switched off, I can simply press the high beam button to illuminate the World around me.<\/p>\n

Also, combine it with the LED floor lighting pictured above, which is an optional extra, and you’ll never have to splash on a motion-controlled Amazon porch light again.<\/p>\n

BMW K 1600 Tourer<\/h2>\n

So there we have it, five driver aids and technical parts that are a welcome addition to the 2022 range K 1600 touring car<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On-the-go prices start at \u00a3 20,215 for the K 1600 B model and rise to \u00a3 24,410 for the top of the range K 1600 Grand America model. The bikes will be on display in the showrooms in March 2022.<\/p>\n
