Scorpion’s new Exo-Com Bluetooth Communicator comes from Uclear Digital<\/a> and designed to fit into the company’s new EXO-T520 and EXO-GT930 helmets. I recently reviewed it Scorpio Exo-T520<\/a> and GT930<\/a> and are waiting for the release of these new communication units.<\/p>\n Now that they have finally arrived, let’s dive into what the devices do and how they work. BT comms are some of my favorite rider accessories and I make sure I have one on all of my helmets. They are weatherproof and use the latest Bluetooth 5.0 software.<\/p>\n Installation was straightforward with no complications. Scorpio<\/a> has several helpful videos on their website that will quickly guide you through the installation and pairing of your smartphone and app. The app informs me about the current status of the firmware (was it), my battery life, various settings (see graphic) and enables me to register ownership.<\/p>\n As with the Uclear HBC200 which I reviewed in 2013<\/a>, The Exo-Com microphones are integrated in the 40 mm loudspeakers with \u201cPremium Tuning and Graphic EQ\u201d. They use patented Advanced Beam Forming (ABF) technology to focus the dual microphones on the user’s mouth. It’s designed to eliminate the need for a boom or other external microphone and the hassle of attaching or rubbing a microphone incorrectly. That worked in 2013 and is still brilliant today.<\/p>\n The devices also have adjustable noise suppression with digital signal processing (DSP). DSP listens to the waveform of the input noise and creates an opposite waveform to negate the noise. It works smoothly and effectively. The music quality is top notch, with lots of volume, excellent clarity and solid bass.<\/p>\n The Scorpion Exo-Com is controlled via three easy-to-use buttons. They work similarly to Uclear’s other communication units. Since I am familiar with the Uclear pattern, there was nothing new to learn. A fourth button, Quick Access, is located on the bottom of the device. Pushing it will bring up Siri or Google Assistant, allowing drivers to use their smartphone’s voice control resources.<\/p>\n The system proved easy to use and reliable on the first try. I turned it on with the middle button for two seconds. Next, I held the up and down buttons for two seconds to put the device into phone pairing mode. I confirmed this on the phone and was connected.<\/p>\n Next I started the Exo-Com Mobile App. The app asked to press the power button once. The app immediately connected to Exo-Com and I was in business. I noticed that the firmware is up to date so I couldn’t test the firmware update via the smartphone feature, but it is available.<\/p>\n Pairing the intercom was just as easy. This system requires that you turn on up to four units and then press and hold the shortcut button on each unit for five seconds. They will all blink purple. Once that happens, a single press of the power button on any device will initiate the process of pairing the intercom with each device and satisfactorily announcing how it will be paired one at a time.<\/p>\n I had two Scorpion Exo-Com units and they paired up quickly. From there I added two more Uclear Motion Infinity units. They also initiate pairing with their shortcut keys. All of our devices then allowed us to turn the intercom on or off, play music, have music overlays and work fine.<\/p>\n Intercom communication from bike to bike takes place via mesh radio and supports up to four riders. If you’ve read anything about Mesh, you probably know that pairing with other drivers is a lot easier than with the old bluetooth powered intercoms. Mesh typically has greater range, clearer signal, and allows drivers to get on, get off, or swap places while staying connected. It’s very good stuff and of course it’s compatible with any Uclear device too. Scorpion claims range of up to half a mile between riders is what we experienced.<\/p>\n On the way, the Exo-Com devices offered us relatively interference-free reception and clear communication. Like most bluetooth communication devices, they provided the range they advertised. We didn’t do any scientific measurements, but given our usual driver-to-driver distance, they certainly did well. We have occasionally experienced dropouts when the leader was too far ahead and circling a canyon wall, but this applies to all of the communication units I have tested. We automatically reconnected when this driver was no longer blocked by rocks or distance.<\/p>\n Charging requires removing and disconnecting the battery from the system. While it’s not difficult, it’s not very elegant either. It’s an uclear thing on all the models I know. On the plus side, if you’re an Iron Butt rider and need more than the advertised 15 hour battery life, you can bring spare batteries with you and swap them out when needed.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
