The road toll in Australia has risen despite pandemic lockdowns. <\/span>Nick Moir<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n It was a 1.4 percent increase over the same period last year and follows years of government efforts to cut tolls.<\/p>\n The number of deaths on the streets of Queensland rose 10.2 percent to 291. This is the highest number of deaths on the streets of this state in at least five years and the highest this year of any state or territory. In Victoria, too, they rose 6.5 percent to 230.<\/p>\n NSW defied the trend, with deaths falling 8.6 percent, or 25, to 266.<\/p>\n The number of driver deaths was 550, an increase of eight compared to the same time last year and the same number as in 2017. The number of passenger deaths has decreased by 23 percent over the past five years.<\/p>\n But the number of motorcycle deaths rose nearly 16 percent to 219 by the end of November compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n There has been an increase in motorcycle purchases since the beginning of the pandemic. Sales in the first nine months of this year are 37 percent higher than the same period in 2019. Off-road motorcycle purchases rose 55 percent, while street motorcycle sales rose nearly 11 percent.<\/p>\n The Australian ministers of transport signed a national road strategy ten years ago with the aim of reducing tolls by 30 percent. The toll fell by 20 percent.<\/p>\n A new strategy has passed through the draft phase and is due to be published shortly.
