Based on the design of the enduro racing machines of the 1980s, especially the design template for the Paris-Dakar rally for two-wheelers, the Desert X is being promoted as a real multi-purpose machine.

This is characterized by the 21-liter fuel tank and it is planned to extend the range of the Desert X by installing a second 8-liter tank on the subframe. The fuel transfer from the rear to the front tank is activated when the fuel level in the main tank falls below a certain level and can be activated via the dashboard.

The power comes from Ducati’s Testastretta 11 V-Twin of the same name, which displaces 937 cc displacement with desmosdromic valve actuation. The Euro 5 compliant mill develops 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm. While comparisons are made with those Ducati Multistrada V2, the ratios in the Desert X’s six-speed gearbox are different, with first and second gears made much shorter to emphasize acceleration, and third through fifth gears utilizing engine torque, while sixth now becomes an overdrive for highway driving .

The Desert X’s focus is on performance both on-road and off-road, and this is achieved with six driving modes in the electronics suite. In addition to the usual Sport, Touring, Urban and Wet driving modes, the Desert X offers both Enduro and the new rally mode.

In Enduro mode, the engine power is reduced so that the driver can tackle the most demanding dirt roads with greater safety, and for less experienced drivers this mode makes driving the Desert X easier. For die-hard drivers, the rally mode gives full engine power and reduced electronic control free, giving the driver full control of the Desert X.

The driving aids also include Engine Brake Control (EBC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up & Down and ABS Cornering. ABS cornering can be set to three levels in the Sport, Touring, Urban and Wet riding modes and completely switched off in the Enduro and Rally modes.

All the necessary information that the driver needs on the Desert X is shown on the 5-inch TFT LCD display with Bluetooth connectivity to the driver’s smartphone at an additional cost.
