Each spray can contains liquid with a unique chemical signature so that police can later find those covered with it.

The spray is harmless, but remains on skin, clothing and other surfaces for more than two months. Pointing a UV light at it will show when the person was tagged.

It was pioneered by South Yorkshire Police and was launched on Wednesday in West Yorkshire, where the forensic spray is being applied to more than 100 security guards in bars and clubs across the county. It is believed to be used in Kent and Hereford as well.

Chief Superintendent Jackie Marsh, director of the West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, said, “The introduction of SmartTag in West Yorkshire is another milestone in our ongoing commitment to keeping people safe in the night economy.”

“Calming effect on troublemakers”

Gary Higgins, Director of Commercial Operations at SmartWater Group, said, “In recent police-sponsored trials, the mere presence of SmartTag has proven to be a powerful deterrent.

“It has a noticeably calming effect on troublemakers, even without having to use a single canister. SmartWater is a powerful tool because it gives the police the evidence they need to prosecute and thus hundreds of criminals are behind bars.

“As we prepare for a busy Christmas season, we send out a clear message that violent behavior will not be tolerated in our nightly venues or in our larger communities.”

Police and corporate sources said it could also be used in the event of sexual assault, although that would be a decision of the trained security guard on site.

“If the circumstances are right, we could flag someone suspected of wronging or sexual assault,” a source said. “The idea is that we want to deter and prevent.

“But when there is an incident, you can physically take someone to a specific event at a specific time and place. There are many difficulties in investigating violence in the night pub. They rely on video surveillance or witnesses whose memories can be tarnished for whatever reason. “

SmartTag is also used by law enforcement officers in Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, West Mercia, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire to tag people who illegally ride off-road motorcycles.

Bouncers are armed with “SmartTag” sprays to keep tabs on violent night owls and those who have committed sexual assault or Spike other clubbers.
