Bell, a Brookline resident, was seriously injured when he was surrounded and attacked by a group of 30 to 40 people on November 18. State Police said the group was driving off-road motorcycles and ATVs when they met Bell on Boylston Street near Fenway Park. At least one suspect threw a length of pipe through the window of Bell’s vehicle, while another threw a large rock through one of the car windows. “He wanted to get a turkey. That’s all he did. A simple errand at 7:30 am,” Bell’s daughter said in an earlier interview. “You wouldn’t think it would be a dangerous time for someone to be outside.” State police said Bell was forced to drive on the curb while members of the group damaged his car. He tried to escape by heading west across the Bowker Overpass to Storrow Drive, but some of the dirt bike and ATV riders followed him. Bell drove on onto Soldiers Field Road and ended up stuck at the top of Cambridge Street exit in Allston. where investigators said he was attacked by one of the drivers after he lowered his window while trying to ask people in another car to call 911. He was able to drive away again, this time to a nearby gas station, where state police said he was out of his car and fell to the ground. Bell is still recovering from his injuries. “While I can’t be with my family, I am grateful to them for their great support and for me,” said Richard Bell in his video message. Shortly thereafter, Bell is overwhelmed by emotion and had to take a break from recording the message. “I’m sorry for the tears and I haven’t had a heart attack,” said Bell after a pause. “It just hurts to cry and even to breathe.
