For good reason too. We have all seen motorcycles that have survived a harsh winter on the roads, after all, they are not difficult to miss. Corrosion eats up exposed metal parts and can irreversibly and frankly ugly damage our pride and joys. But there is good news.<\/p>\n
Corrosion is preventable and there is no need to let the danger deter you this winter. To help you understand what it is, why it happens, and how to prevent it, we have prepared this little guide to that dreaded C word. Let’s get into that.<\/p>\n

Corrosion is another word for rust that occurs when metal meets water and oxygen.<\/p>\n
While the metal parts of our motorcycles are designed to handle water during normal operation, this delicate balance is disrupted in winter by the introduction of road salt. Salt greatly speeds up the rusting process when dissolved in water, which is why corrosion is only seen as a problem in winter.<\/p>\n
And no, unfortunately, road salt is not the solution. It lowers the freezing temperature of the water and so reduces the chance of ice on the streets, so it’s pretty important. It also hangs around on the road surface, so even a fast jet puts you at risk of corrosion on a dry, sunny morning. Simply put, there is no getting around it.<\/p>\n
So how can we prevent it?<\/h2>\n
The first step is to equip your bike with one Winter anti-corrosion spray<\/a>. These sprays, which are usually oil based, sit on the outside of the metal and create a protective barrier that is harder for the salty water to penetrate.<\/p>\n However, it’s not the perfect solution. Over time, this barrier can become thin, and achieving 100% coverage is not always easy, and this is where the next steps come in.<\/p>\n After a ride, make sure you wash all the winter scraps and muck out your bike with cold water when you get home. Use cold water to do this, as hot water can dissolve the salt crystals and even help spread them further around your bike.<\/p>\n Additionally, every few weeks you should thoroughly clean your bike with soap, water, and a brush kit that will help you get into all those little nooks and crannies.
