Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I’m a fan of the sporty, angular look of the new tiger, and it definitely seems ready for summer touring, especially loaded with optional Triumph plastic luggage.

This sporty look, together with a deep-drawn exhaust, lack of impact protection and a large touring screen, clearly show that the Tiger Sport 660 was developed for life on the road and not off-road.

Appearance aside, the biggest news is the introduction of Triumph’s signature three-cylinder engine into the mid-range touring world, something that sets it apart from its immediate competition.

As Triumph was quick to point out during a pre-launch press conference, its two main competitors (Yamaha’s Tracer 7 and Kawasaki’s Versys 650) are both powered by twins. The British brand hopes the new option will attract a lot of potential buyers, and on paper it is easy to see why.

When it comes to performance, the Euro 5 compliant 660 cc triple produces 80 hp and 64 Nm of torque. This puts it slightly ahead of the Versys (66 hp and 61 Nm) on paper, while it is also more powerful than the 72 hp Tracer 7, although the Yamaha produces a fraction more torque with 68 Nm.

While we have to wait to throw our leg over the Tiger Sport 660 and see how it does in the real world, we’ve always found that the Triumph Triples offer the best of both worlds, with lots of torque and lots of power deliver when the speeds increase.

For younger riders looking for their first big bike, the motor can also be adapted to the A2 approval regulations. And at least on paper, it looks like it could be a great first bike or even a step down for more seasoned riders who are tired of lugging heavy adventure bikes in and out of their garages.

The saddle sits relatively low at 835mm, and Triumph also says the seat is slimmer to ensure riders can put their feet on the ground when they come to a stop. The bike also weighs a reasonable 206 kg (wet).

Developed for adventures on asphalt

In contrast to the other Tiger Adventure bikes in the current Triumph range, the Tiger Sport 660 is clearly designed to stay on the road.

It’s equipped with a 41mm Showa upside-down fork at the front that offers 150mm of travel, while those values are matched at the rear with a Showa monoshock that comes with a preload adjustment for riding with a pillion or luggage.

The wheels are 17-inch cast aluminum rims fitted with Michelin Road 5 tires, further proof that this bike is geared towards curves rather than gravel roads.

Braking power comes from Japanese manufacturer Nissin, a choice likely made with budget in mind as Brembo supplies the Tiger 900 range of brakes. The 660 Sport is equipped with two 310 mm discs in the front and a single disc in the rear.

Road tours are fueled from a 17 liter tank, which Triumph has tested offers a range of approximately 230 miles.

Spending so long in the saddle requires protection from the elements, hence the large touring windshield what triumph says can be adjusted with one hand.

technology

As a manufacturer, Triumph even equips its lowest quality motorcycles with healthy electronics (think of those Tiger 850 Sport) and the Tiger Sport 660 is no different.

The mini TFT screen displays important information and was developed for integration into Triumph’s own connectivity system for turn-by-turn navigation.

The 660 is also equipped as standard with the driving modes road and rain, full LED lighting, ABS and switchable traction control.

This specification list is even more impressive when you consider that the triumph is available on the street for just £ 8,450, which is within range of the Tracer 7 (£ 8,202).

We look forward to checking it out, and we’ll bring you a full review once we’ve tried it.
