My summer trips are generally from gas station to gas station with 8 to 12 hours of sitting time for a week or longer. When I hold a throttle against the return spring on long stretches of motorway, my right hand and wrist stiffen painfully.<\/p>\n
My forearm is pumping up and even my elbow is starting to hurt from being stuck in one position. my Yamaha Venture<\/a> has cruise control so I can mostly avoid these nasty episodes or they don’t last too long.<\/p>\n However, it is Ultimate motorcycling Yamaha T\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 700 Project Bike<\/a> is more of an ADV bike than a full-fledged tourer designed and adapted for my comfort.<\/p>\n When I picked up the T\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 700 in Los Angeles for a 1,120 mile drive to Portland along the Pacific coast, the first feature of the bike I was looking for was the cruise control, which it didn’t have. My first reaction was, “Oh-oh, this is going to hurt.”<\/p>\n I recently had a carpal tunnel surgery and was concerned about my grip strength over long hours of daily riding. After owning a cruise control motorcycle for nine years, throttle locks weren’t right on my radar, though I’d noticed them on the sidelines in ads and articles. I remember one device because the name is associated with strength – Atlas Throttle Lock.<\/p>\n The Atlas Throttle Lock was born out of necessity when the creator broke his wrist on a long motorcycle tour. It is a universal device that uses friction to neutralize the pressure of the throttle return spring.<\/p>\n The installation of the Atlas Throttle Lock only takes a few minutes. You test the three included thrust pads to find the one that fills the gap between the device and the throttle body to the left of the throttle grip.<\/p>\n According to the Atlas installation table, every motorcycle seems to have this gap. When you press the engage button, the friction lining presses against the throttle body, relieving any pressure on the return spring. When you press the release button, the friction lining is pulled back and the pressure of the gas return spring is no longer neutralized. The throttle will stay in whatever position you move it to when the Atlas throttle lock is engaged.<\/p>\n On level ground I found that it kept my desired speed for a long time. However, the roads I was traveling on were seldom level. Although the throttle stays where you use it, the bike will slow down every time you go uphill and accelerate every time you go downhill. Remember, it’s a throttle, not cruise control.<\/p>\n I found myself resting my hand on the throttle, unconsciously making subtle adjustments to keep the speed constant. The key point to remember here is that I didn’t use the grip force to hold against the throttle valve spring; the Atlas throttle lock<\/a> did that for me. It neutralizes the return spring, but that’s all.<\/p>\n The throttle is easily moved from closed to full throttle by hand, although your hand will require every movement while it is on.<\/p>\n We’re all used to letting go and using the tension of the return spring to close the throttle – that doesn’t happen with the Atlas throttle lock. It takes getting used to that the throttle stays where you leave it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
