Anderson, Stuart Curtis, 91, of Deer River, died on August 25 with a view of his beloved Little Moose Lake in the sky. He’d spent the last year battling a prostate cancer resurgence that eventually metastasized and overtook him. He was born on August 19, 1930 to Curtis and Blanch Anderson in Hutchinson, MN. He spent his youth in Hutchinson, Rainy Lake, and California when he and his mother followed his father, who was stationed there, while serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theater.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
After graduating from high school, he was accepted into both West Point and Annapolis, but failed to pass the eye exam for either school. So he studied at Macalester and the University of MN until he volunteered for the Navy in early 1951 during the Korean War. While on vacation at home, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Keeler of Deer River, and married her for 69 wonderful years. Upon release, he attended the University of Maryland on the GI Bill and graduated with degrees in civil engineering and architecture. He took a job with the Tennessee Valley Authority, and they lived in Knoxville, TN until 1957 when he started a civil engineering job with Arthur G. McKee and he and Phyllis moved to Hibbing to be closer to their families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Stu and Phyllis adopted and raised two children in Hibbing, Steve and Sandy, while spending the weekends at the cabin on Little Moose Lake. In 1986 McKee collapsed and Stu and a few other remaining engineers founded Noramco. In 1992, Stu retired from Noramco, moved into the cubicle and started a consulting civil engineering firm which he ran full time serving Northern MN’s needs until he retired as a professional engineer in August 2020 at the age of 90. Stu was highly active in the First Presbyterian Church of Hibbing and later the United Methodist Church of Deer River. He was also a key member of the Grand Rapids Gideon organization for over 20 years. Christianity was the driving force in Stu’s life and was a top priority for his family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Stu’s interests and activities are too numerous to mention. He loved the hunt and the outdoors and was a very active member of the Isaac Walton League, the Hibbing Rifle Team, the Hibbing Sportsmen Club, the Grand Rapids Sportsmen Club, and the Deer River Sportsmen Club. He helped fund and design the shooting ranges for the Hibbing and Deer River clubs, and was a competitive shooter in small-caliber, high-performance, and trap shooting. He and Phyllis volunteered for over 55 years teaching children firearms safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Stu was an avid reader (especially military history), loved painting in watercolors and oils, enjoyed taking photos, teaching his family to play golf and tennis, teaching his family to water-ski, loving both road and off-road motorcycles (he and Phyllis covered practically all of the USA and rode his Kawasaki 1100 until he was 88), was in the snowmobile club (including the snowcat), loved dogs (although in fairness he wasn’t the best dog trainer!), had his own gunsmith, made dozens of Canoeing with family and friends to the BWCA, cross-country skiing (including winter camping at the BWCA), building his cabin, enjoying sailing (including building two sailboats from scratch), and loving capercaillie, duck, and deer hunting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
In everything he pursued, Stu gave 100% and gave up his time – but he always did it with his wife by his side and his family whenever possible. He is deeply missed, but it was a well lived life and his influence on family and friends will continue for generations. Preceded in the death by his parents, Curtis and Blanch. Survived by Mrs. Phyllis Anderson; Children Steve Anderson, daughter Sandy (Anderson) Wheelecor, son-in-law Bill Wheelecor, daughter-in-law Michelle Anderson; Grandchildren Matt Wheelecor (Kendra Wheelecor), Mitchel Wheelecor, Madason (Wheecor) Thompson (Wyatt Thompson), Noah Anderson, Eva Anderson; Great-grandson Karson (Wheecor) Koski, Mason Wheelecor, Elsie Wheelecor, Ava Thompson, Amelia Thompson, Oden Thompson. Special thanks to Bill and Sandy Wheelecor for the extra work, care, and attention they have given Stu over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 30th at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, 27 1st Ave NE, Deer River, MN 56636. Before that, a meeting with family and friends, followed by lunch and internment at Deer Cemetery by the river. No gifts, but if possible, please enjoy his daily Black Russian in his memory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
