ERIN – In order to maintain consistency across the county, the city of Erin will now allow all-terrain vehicles to be used on the city’s streets.
At a November 20 meeting, the council heard from the Director of Infrastructure Services and engineer Nick Colucci about the approval of all-terrain vehicles on roads.
In June, Mayor Allan Alls asked the city to reconsider its policies.
“The municipalities either had to register or refuse to allow ATVs on the roads and if you are not listed in the (regulation) you have to register,” Colucci told the city council.
“The city of Erin is not listed on this (regulation) so we need to register.”
The bylaws submitted to the council prohibit off-road motorcycles and ATVs on any highway within the city, which Colucci noted in order to stay in line with the other parishes in the county.
“The extreme terrain vehicles are much wider and heavier so they are considered banned and all-terrain motorcycles are typically banned in most communities,” he said, adding that most of the enforcement is done by the OPP.
In accordance with the city’s Noise Abatement Ordinance, all-terrain vehicles are not allowed on the streets in the city’s urban areas between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am.
The bylaws also indicate that ATVs are not permitted on the grounds of community centers, parks, sports fields, playgrounds, hiking trails, or in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the city.
In addition, they are not permitted during services near a church or funeral home, or near a school between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. during the school year.
“I will say that if we pass this resolution and choose to do so, we will be the last church in the county to do this,” Alls said.
The council received the report and approved the proposed statute.
