State police publicly called for help Tuesday to identify dozen of ATV and dirt bike riders who allegedly pushed an elderly driver off the road in Boston last week, followed him, and then brutally assaulted him, officials said.
The driver, an 82-year-old Brookline man, was seriously injured in the attack last Thursday, state police said in a statement. He stays in the hospital.
At around 7:30 p.m. last Thursday, the Brookline man was driving from Park Drive to Boylston Street near Bowker Overpass when he saw 30 to 40 off-road motorcycles approaching his car, the statement said. The cyclists forced the car to the right side of the curb while some of the Drivers began smashing the car’s windows, the statement said.
The man drove onto the Bowker Overpass to Storrow Drive to escape the drivers, but several followed him and continued to beat and kick the car, police said.
He continued down Soldiers Field Road, then tried to take the Cambridge Street exit in Allston but, according to State Police, got stuck in traffic near the top of the ramp.
When the Brookline man rolled his window down to seek help from nearby drivers, a man punched him through the open window while other cyclists continued to kick the car, the statement said.
One of the suspects also threw a pipe through the rear window of the Buick while another threw a large rock through another window, the statement said.
As traffic began to move, the man escaped by turning left on Cambridge Street and driving himself to Joe’s Kwik Marks, where he got out of his car and crashed to the ground, State Police said.
He has been taken to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, where he is still being hospitalized but is expected to be alive, according to state police.
