Much of the work at Ultimate motorcycling includes towing motorcycles. I have a Toyota Tundra so it’s all about tying the bikes. Dirt bikes are easy and naked street bikes are usually not a problem as the handlebars or lower triple tree are simple. Disguised motorcycles can usually be made with the help of one Canyon Dancer barware (Original or II). However, when you add hand guards, as are often found on adventure bikes, it becomes impossible to find a place to secure the lashings without putting some plastic on them. Fortunately, we’ve found a savior – the PSR Bike Tie-Down Clamp (BTC).
The PSR Bike-Ti-Down Clamp is an ingeniously simple solution to our problem and one with an unlikely inspiration. PSR VP / Product Development / Crash Test Dummy Charlie Hon explains: “One day I cleared out my truck and found some hair clips that my wife had left behind in the truck. I looked at it a little and designed the BTC – applied for and received a utility model for it. “
The PSR BTC is a spring-loaded clamp with an opening for the handle. An oval eyelet gives you a place to attach a lashing strap.
To attach, press the clamp open, place it over the handle and release the pressure. That’s it – it’s on.
You have to be a little careful when pulling down the straps. Because the straps are attached to the ends of the handlebars rather than near the handlebar clamp, there is much more leverage applied to the handlebars. Go slowly, carefully increasing the tension on both sides, paying attention to every bend in the bar – some bars are more pliable than others.
I had no problem tying a Yamaha Tracer 9 GT and a Kawasaki Versys 650 with the PSR BTC. I was able to apply so much tension that the motorcycle was absolutely stable on the loading area, but the handlebars were not damaged. For owners of adventure bikes who transport their mounts to riding arenas, a dream comes true.
It’s worth noting that PSR’s litigation-inspired disclaimer on the packaging states that the BTC is for use with clip-ons only. However, on the PSR website, the product is described as “Perfect for ALL motorcycles, ATV, UTV, side by side, jet skis, snowmobiles and trailers”. We believe motorcyclists are smart enough to determine if BTC will work safely for their specific uses – don’t disappoint us.
According to the PSR website, the PSR Bike Tie-Down Clamp is suitable for handlebars with a diameter of up to 1.5 inches. We used them on 7/8 ” handlebars and they worked perfectly, with room for a larger diameter grip.
The BTC is made of beautifully crafted forged aluminum with an anodized gunmetal finish. The spring and pivot are made of stainless steel. A ribbed rubber coating on the inside ensures the high-traction interface between the BTC and the handle. The units have a nice weight with the look and feel of high quality manufacturing. The packaging is top notch too, including a PSR sticker, an American flag sticker, and a PSR key fob with a pair of BTCs on it.
As someone who has wrestled too many times to secure an ADV motorcycle in my truck, the PSR bike lashing clamp is the deal of the century for $ 55 a pair. It’s one of those products that makes me ask, “Where have you been all my life?”
