There have been 180 off-road crashes in southwest Victoria since early 2021, 21 more than at the same time in 2020.

According to the police, inexperience was a factor for many.

The Surf Coast and Otways have been identified as high risk areas.

The warning comes five weeks after the death of a Wyndham teenager in a dirt bike accident east of Stawell.

The 18-year-old from Tarneit was killed when the machine she was riding on crashed into a tree in Illawarra on November 1st.

Police say riders can reduce the risk by making sure their bikes are serviced, wearing proper safety gear and always riding with a buddy.
