I picked them up Ultimate motorcycling Yamaha Ténéré 700 Project Bike in Los Angeles and drove it to Portland, Oregon, in three days. For the first 140 mile day, I sat in the full-length OEM rally seat. For the following 380 mile day, I added a gel pad. And on the third day, 600 miles, I stood for almost 14 hours. When I got home, I swapped the OEM rally seat for the standard two-piece seat combination for my next 1,500 mile tours and Off-road driving, and I found standing much more comfortable than sitting at all speeds below 60 mph.
Each buttock has a different “stressful” pain tolerance, and mine was on the OEM rally seat for 10 minutes. Ten minutes hadn’t even got me to the Los Angeles freeway, and I was writhing. About halfway to my first motel that evening, I bought a gel pad that I placed between myself and the already tall Yamaha rally seat. I was able to get through day 2 between standing, sitting and squirming. However, day 3 started to hurt when I saddled up. The other motorcycle in my garage is a Yamaha Venture very much designed for comfort. It has a very soft, modified pillow top seat that has taken me on two Iron Butt Saddle Sore rides and many 14 hour riding days. I’m not trying to copy the comfort of a purpose-built endurance touring bike. I don’t want the distraction of squirming in the seat all day, however. The One Piece Comfort seat from Seat Concepts is exactly what I was hoping for – reasonably comfortable for driving from gas to gas.
My first test with the Seat Concepts Persch was to accelerate and drive non-stop for 3.5 hours. I heard my favorite songs on a new bluetooth intercom, which I also tested, and the hours went by in a flash. i wore mine Spidi 4Season textile pants about my FirstGear heated pants. It was 38 degrees the entire trip, so I needed wind protection and warmth.
When I moved on the seat on purpose, which wasn’t often, the Spidi pants were held in place by the grippier top. Every movement I felt was really slipping between my heated underwear and the inside of my Spidi pants. I drove through some tight turns at an aggressive pace to lean the Ténéré 700 forward and my bum didn’t slide on the grapple top at all. Moving on the seat was no problem; I just had to lose a little weight.
The standard thickness comfort seat from Seat Concepts is 10.5 inches wide where you are supposed to sit. In the same location behind the tank, the stock two-piece seat is seven inches wide and the OEM rally seat is 7.5 inches wide at the top. The Seat Concepts tapers to 8.5 inches as they get closer to the tank where your thighs meet, which is half an inch narrower than the OEM seats. This helps us riders with shorter stride lengths when stopped. The combination of the Seat Concepts Comfort upholstery material and the additional seat width of around three inches is a game changer. I literally wasn’t worried about how my bum was going to feel with each passing hour.
Seat Concepts offers a comprehensive range of replacement seats – Comfort, Comfort Sport-Touring, Rally and Rally Hard Adventure 2.0 – in various heights as well as self-made foam and covers for the standard and pillion seats. I would love to be this Ténéré owner with a 34-inch inseam, as I would really enjoy the two-piece Comfort Sport touring seat in the tall thickness. But given my stature, I wouldn’t be able to touch the floor or swing my leg over the seat.
