SP Connect offers a wide variety of phone mounts for motorcycles, cars, bicycles, fitness and other activities. Although the company is relatively new to the US market, it has group locations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and China.
I’ve seen and used Quad lock, Rokform, Peak design, and ram units. They’re all good and, but for Ram’s X-Grip, use the basic principle of stowing your phone in a proprietary case and buying a handlebar, stem, mirror, clutch cover, handlebar clamp, brake, or other type of mount. Then by pushing and twisting it will hold your precious phone firmly to the bike or other vehicle, each with its own unique lock shape and mechanism type.
SP Connect, Quad Lock and Rokform offer a robust range of mounts and cases for all major phone manufacturers and models. Peak Design is more of a travel / camera bag / mount manufacturer with a limited range of mounts and only four supported phone cases. All other phones require a universal adapter to be glued to your existing case.
Rams X-Grip is a spring-loaded setup that wraps the phone near all four corners. The user should then strap the phone into place with an included reticulated rubber tether device. I’ve heard phones with the X-Grip go AWOL after a violent jolt when the tether is not in use, but I see a lot of X-Grips in use without users attaching the tether – much like deciding whether to to floss or not after brushing. I think they are unsightly and taking too long to attach / detach from the phone. They either use a U-bolt or a claw mount on the handlebar and are not very elegant – a quality I need with accessories.
SP Connect makes cases for Apple, Samsung, Google and Huawei, as well as several universal clips and cases for other smartphone brands. Hey, they even have a Ducati branded case for the Matchy Matchy set. You know who you are
Let’s now concentrate on the Moto Bundle from SP Connect that I tested. This bundle contains the mobile phone case, weather protection cover, handlebar mount (black or chrome-plated), flat surface mounts and a variety of adapters as well as an assembly tool.
The cover is made of a heavy, three-ply rubber-like material. It looks great, allows use of all phone ports and buttons, and supports wireless charging with the optional wireless charging module ($ 60).
The weather cover is a nice, clear piece of protection for the phone and it retains the touchscreen capability. Instead of sticking to the phone screen like a traditional screen protector, like the case itself, it is firmly attached over the phone, enclosing and sealing the phone and its connectors from inclement weather and dusty conditions.
The handlebar bracket is beautifully CNC machined from aircraft aluminum. It has a wide range of articulations that allow you to position the phone however you want. The flat surface mount is a nice bonus that can be used on a car dashboard, wall, desk, or wherever. Our photos show me mounting the phone on two motorcycles, although there were many alternative positions I could have chosen.
The handlebar mount requires a push and rotation of 90 degrees to lock the phone. No lever is needed to release the phone. You can rotate the phone 360 degrees and operate it in landscape or portrait format. Adapters for 7/8 ”, 1”, 1 1/8 ”and 1 1/4” handlebars are included. An optional wireless charger ($ 60) and various anti-vibration modules (starting at $ 30) are available for this setup.
However, users can take off the arm and clip the phone directly to the handlebar clamp Apple recommends against it for newer iPhones. You can also use the extended height washer (included) to lift the phone if clearance is an issue.
With an MSRP of $ 100, the SP Connect Moto Bundle is an inexpensive setup – only RAM costs less – and is just as beautiful and useful as the higher-priced units. SP Connect’s extensive line of non-moto mounts enables users to secure their phones almost anywhere they are needed.
Installation is easy and the hex tool is included. The holder is inconspicuous, looks good and disappears behind the phone when in use. The SP Connect Moto Bundle offers top quality at a great price – I use mine a lot.
