The Massachusetts police are asking for help from the public in identifying several people who, according to investigators, surrounded and assaulted an 82-year-old driver in Boston last week. State Police said members of a group of 30 to 40 off-road motorcycles and ATVs stepped into the victim’s car, with at least one suspect throwing a piece of pipe through the elderly man’s vehicle window while another threw a large rock through one of the car windows. The victim, a Brookline man, suffered serious injuries and remains in the hospital but is expected to survive, according to police. State Police said the suspects were running dirt bikes and ATVs and ATVs that were approaching him around 7:30 p.m. on Boylston Street near Fenway Park last Thursday. “He was going to pick up a turkey. That’s all he did. A simple errand at 7:30 am,” said victim John Atwater’s daughter of NewsCenter 5. “You wouldn’t think it was a dangerous time for someone would be to be outside. ” State police said the victim was forced onto the curb on the right side of the road with several members of the group breaking windows on the victim’s car. Police said the elderly victim “tried evasive driving to escape the suspects” as she continued on Soldiers Field Road. Investigators said the driver got stuck at the top of the Cambridge Street exit in Allston where he was attacked by one of the drivers after he lowered his window to ask occupants in another vehicle to call 911 for help. Police said the driver, a man, approached the older driver and started beating him through the open window. At the same time, other passengers kicked the victim’s car. One of the suspects threw a length of pipe through the rear window of the car; Another threw a large stone through one of the car windows, according to police. “We consider this to be attempted murder,” said the victim’s daughter. “It wasn’t just some kind of attack. He really could have died.” State Police said the driver was finally able to escape the traffic and attacked at this point by driving to a nearby gas station, where he got out of his car and fell to the ground. Boston EMS responded and transported him to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, where he stayed in the hospital days later. “He didn’t do anything wrong. Police said the victim was driving his vehicle from Park Drive to Boylston Street when he saw 30 to 40 off-road motorcycles and ATVs approaching him.
“He was going to pick up a turkey. That’s all he did. A simple errand at 7:30 am,” said victim John Atwater’s daughter of NewsCenter 5. “You wouldn’t think it was a dangerous time for someone would be to be outside. “

Police said the victim was able to drive away from the scene and head west across the Bowker Overpass to Storrow Drive with the intention of going to a police station for help.

“We also ask anyone who may have cell phone recordings of the group or the incident, or who called 911 to report the incident, to give us a call,” state police said. “Anyone with such information, photos, or footage, or who called 911 that night, should call the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County at 617-727-8817.”
