Vintage, classic and antique motorcycles of all makes and models will be on display from November 13th to April 3rd when the Putnam Museum & Science Center in Davenport presents its in-house production Winter Wheels: Antique motorcycle exhibitionwhere guests can look at rusty gold to design restorations for everything in between.
This exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution Affiliate of Quad Cities – an original, community-curated display of items – features vehicles loaned by motorcycle enthusiasts across the region. Limited edition goods will be available at the Putnam Museum Store, and museum-goers will learn to appreciate the engineering, preservation and craftsmanship of vintage motorcycles.
The Daimler riding car manufactured by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Germany in 1885 was the first petroleum-powered motorcycle with a combustion engine. Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the first production motorcycle in 1894. There are three main types of motorcycles – road, all-terrain, and dual-purpose motorcycles – and within these types there are many sub-types of motorcycles for different purposes. For each type there is often a racing counterpart, such as road racing and road bikes or motocross including dirt bikes. Road bikes include cruisers, sport bikes, scooters and mopeds, and many other types, while off-road motorcycles include many types that are designed for dirt-oriented racing classes such as motocross that are not street legal in most areas. Dual-purpose machines like the Dual-Sport-Style are designed for off-road use, but have features that make them legal and comfortable on the road as well. Each configuration offers either specific advantages or broad possibilities, and each design creates a different riding posture.
