With the UK banning the sale of petrol motorcycles from 2035, the cycling world has begun to look to the future.
Whether it’s electric bikes, hydrogen, or an as-yet-undiscovered green energy source, zero-emission motorcycles will stay, and manufacturers like Zero, Energica, and even Harley-Davidson have responded with a selection of new models to tempt you to turn your back on combustion to sweep.
But it’s not every day that you find that a new electric bike is being developed just a stone’s throw away from your office. And even better, one that was designed and built by British trail riders with a view of the avid Greenlaners they see day in, day out.
Right, a new UK manufacturer, BR-E, is working hard on the Spark, a street-legal electric trail bike that’s ready to go on unpaved trips. So what is it about?
Spark’s electric trail bike prototype
When we say it’s a stone’s throw from ABR headquarters, we’re not exaggerating. Co-founder Nigel is based in Stratford-upon-Avon, where they developed the Spark with the help of engineering departments at a number of UK universities.
So far, the team has produced a prototype that gives us a clue of what the Spark will look like when it hits a trail near you in 2022.
With a flat seat, long-stroke suspension and studded tires, the bike looks good for life in rough terrain. And while we have to wait for the full specs for the exact weight to be released, it looks minimalist and sleek, ready for trail rides.
It will also be fully street legal and capable of speeds of 60 mph. With that in mind, we think it could be the electric bike of choice for Sunday mornings and horseback riding after work, rather than a mile-long adventure around the world.
When will it be available
The BR-E Spark will be available for £ 10,250 in 2022, but the brand is currently running a crowdfunding campaign giving early adopters massive discounts on their bike by investing at this early stage and joining the Spark’s journey.
BR-E says that even the smallest donation of £ 10 or £ 20 will allow backers to join the wider advisory team and attend virtual meetings to discuss future plans and designs for the future.
