When I was driving through Scandinavia in the summer a few years ago, I experienced everything that Mother Nature has to offer me. I got drenched in heavy rain, beaten by high winds, and roasted by blazing sunshine, usually seeing all three in a single day.
In other words, it was like going back in the UK. If anything, it helped keep homesickness at bay, a dose of welcome familiarity despite the thousands of miles I’d traveled.
Experience has also taught me that in this weather it is important to invest in first-class riding material developed by bikers who have experienced the full power of nature from the saddle.
That is why the claim “If it works in Scandinavia” from the Swedish motorcycle clothing brand Lindstrands appealed to me immediately.
I know that if it works in their own backyard it will likely work almost anywhere, which is why I was dying to try the brand’s newest laminated adventure suit, the Sunne. Here is everything you need to know.
First impressions of the Lindstrands Sunne suit
At first glance, it’s clear that Linstrands put a lot of effort into preparing the Sunne for anything Mother Nature can throw at you.
The laminated Dryway + membrane that the Swedish brand uses for all of its jackets is waterproof and windproof. We wrote a separate article on why laminated gear is the gold standard when it comes to driving in UK conditions that you can read here.
Both the jacket and pants have a full-length, removable thermal lining for warmth on cool days, and there is even a removable storm collar for freezing cold and wet winter rides.
This weather resistance is great to see, but as I found out on my own trip in Scandinavia, driving rain can quickly be replaced by scorching sun.
When this happens and the clouds clear and the temperatures rise, the Lindstrands Sunne suit’s body ventilation system ensures that you stay cool.
Two zippered chest vents combined with a rear exhaust port to draw cool air past your upper body. This rear vent is permanently open so you don’t have to take off your jacket to open and close it, and is covered by a large flap of fabric to keep water out.
These vents are effective, but the best are found on the sleeves, with large zips from armpits to wrists (pictured below) that let lots of cool air flow onto a part of the body that can get quite sweaty inside a jacket.
The Sunne suit is CE-AA certified thanks to CE level 1 armor on the shoulders, elbows, knees and hips, with a pocket for a back protector and HI-ART reinforcements on the shoulders, elbows, knees and also on the back.
Lindstrands says HI-ART makes textile five times stronger and while we hope we won’t be testing this anytime soon, we like to see the dedication to extra safety in a textile suit.
Finally, the price should be mentioned. Laminated clothing has long been the gold standard for adventure motorcycle clothing, but the technology and manufacturing process come at a significant cost, and laminated adventure suits tend to be on the premium end of the market.
This is why I am so impressed that Lindstrands is selling the entire Sunne suit for less than £ 800 (£ 469 for the jacket and £ 299 for the pants), a really competitive price for a good kit supplied by a reputable manufacturer.
