When the Street Triple 765 showed up, we thought we’d never see the 675 Inline-3 again. However, the Triumph Trident 660 has revived the smaller triple, and now we’re getting the 2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660. The Trident is a capable sports bike, and the new Tiger Sport 660 brings the platform to the world of adventure touring. Here’s a closer look at the smallest tiger to date.
- The 2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is designed for the road. Like the Tiger Sport 850 before it, the Tiger Sport 660 has 17-inch road tires – that seals the deal in terms of off-road capability. This is a purely street motorcycle with adventure styling that includes a little more travel and a higher seat height to improve your view of the world while touring or at work.
- The Tiger Sport 660 gets the same engine as the Trident and the same melody. That means an identical 80-horsepower peak at 10,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 47 ft-lbs at 6250 rpm.
- Touring Bona Fides come from integrated brackets for panniers. Although the side cases are an accessory, the Tiger Sport 660 comes from the factory with brackets integrated into the rear subframe. A 52-liter top case is also available as an option, which devours two full-face helmets.
- The 4.5 gallon fuel tank and estimated fuel economy of 44 mpg give a range of just under 200 miles. This is a decent number for a touring bike, but does not meet the expectations of ADV.
- Michelin Road 5 tires are all about durability and high performance in the wet. When you are on tour you never know when the weather will come after you. That’s why Triumph has fitted the Tiger Sport 660 with a pair of tires that can handle bad weather. When senior editor Nic de Sena tested the Michelin Road 5 Rubber, he was impressed with the performance of the tires in wet and dry conditions.
- Showa takes over the suspension with long travel. The Showa chassis of the 2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is on the base side. The fork is not adjustable, although of the opposite beliefs with cartridge internals. The damper enables remote hydraulic adjustment of the spring preload and adjustment of the rebound damping. The suspension travel at both ends is just under six inches – long for a road bike, modest for ADV.
- With the longer spring travel comes a higher seat height. The Tiger Sport 660’s seat is 32.8 inches above the sidewalk – slightly higher than a Tiger Sport 850.
- The windshield can be adjusted with one hand while driving.
- The Tiger Sport 660’s electronics suite includes two performance modes, switchable traction control and a ride-by-wire throttle, as well as a TFT display to monitor everything. There’s also a slip-and-assist clutch, but no quickshifter. The My Triumph system, which coordinates your smartphone and the Tiger Sport 660, is optional.
- The 2022 list price for the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is $ 9295.
