A WHITEHAVEN The city council has warned that “it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured” following ongoing problems with motorcycles on his property.
Count. Carl Walmsley said mini-motorcycles have been a big problem on the Mirehouse property for as long as he can remember and that if the problem was not resolved, someone would be injured.
And he welcomed the news this week that the police would act on the problem.
Count. Walmsley issued the warning after police spent some time patrolling the bike path at Mirehouse earlier this week.
The police action came after reports from people who caused antisocial behavior on the mini motorcycles and off-road bikes.
A police spokesman said: “We are aware of problems in the area regarding the unsocial use of ATVs.
“We encourage people to report any incidents to us to help us protect Copeland.
“When a crime is ongoing, always call 999.
“To report a non-emergency crime, please call 101 or fill out our non-emergency crime and incident report form here.”
Coun. Walmsley said police intervention on the matter would be “welcomed with open arms” by the majority of the people on his property as this type of antisocial behavior has caused many problems.
He said, “For as long as I can remember as a councilor on the ward, off-road motorcycles have been an ongoing issue on the property. Motorcycles were by far the majority of complaints I’ve had.
“It really is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured, if not worse, so I applaud the news that the police are cracking down on them.
“You will be welcomed with open arms by me and the majority of the residents.”
However, the question has been raised that the problems are due to the fact that a large chunk of the people who ride the bikes don’t have other places to go.
Count. Walmsley added, “Since bike owners have nowhere to take the bikes, they use the bike lanes and local fields and sometimes even roads and payments.
“Together we really need to find a place where bicycles etc. can be used properly and safely.”
