Austria’s big daddy of off-road adventure motorcycles is getting significant updates this year. The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R offers revisions to the chassis and engine as well as improvements to the electronic driver assistance. Let’s summarize what’s new on the great enduro.
- The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R has a new frame. It’s still a chromoly grille design, but now retracts the steering head 0.6 inches and relocates the motor mounts. The aluminum subframe is also new, as is the body around it. There’s also a new, longer swingarm to improve stability during straight, light acceleration.
- The new 6.1 gallon fuel tank is a three-piece design. Inspired by the KTM 890 Adventure range, the 1290 Super Adventure R features a fuel tank at the bottom of the front cylinder head to centralize the crowd. It makes a huge difference in how the 890 is handled.
- The WP Xplor landing gear returns with new settings. KTM has not specified what these changes are other than that the damper will resist bottom out more successfully. If you’re not happy with KTM’s suspension setup, it’s fully adjustable.
- Bridgestone Adventurecross AX41 tires are called this year on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and are specially designed for dirt. The Bridgestones are a cross between the big block patterns you see on tires for open-class adventure bikes and the knobbies you use on dirt bikes. Yes, this is an off-road-focused 21/18 inch rim combination.
- The engine is 3.5 pounds lighter and has other updates. Thinner engine housings reduce weight while a new oil circuit is used. The Pankl transmission has a new shift mechanism that works better with the optional quickshifter. Used gases exit through a new exhaust system, while a new cooling system with two coolers keeps engine temperatures under control. The new body also keeps the heated air from the radiators away from the driver’s legs.
- The airbox is more accessible and only requires four screws to reach it. There’s also a new filter that lets dirt and dust fall to the bottom of the airbox instead of clogging the filter.
- The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R gets a new six-axis IM and the associated electronic aids. There are three driving modes: road, sport and offroad. Dirt fanatics will love the optional rally mode, which has traction control with nine setting levels.
- The optional Tech Pack brings Hill-Hold-Control, electronic adjustment of the engine compression brake and a quickshifter to the party.
- A new 7 inch TFT screen displays new UI software for easier customization. There are also new switches on the handlebars. The display can be paired with your smartphone for various functions via Bluetooth, but not for GPS, Apple Carplay or Android Auto.
- With a key fob you can start the V-Twin, engage the steering lock and unlock the fuel cap without a key. The Race On Remote system also provides relay attack protection to make it more difficult for someone to clone your trailer.
- The MSRP for the 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is $ 19,499. The ADV beast comes in a three-color scheme – orange, blue, and white.
